Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is the most diagnosed subtype of diabetes worldwide, representing 90-95% of all cases, it is a debilitating, degenerative and multifaceted clinical condition that has a significant impact on the health of people who suffer from it. constituting an enormous clinical, economic and social challenge. It is worrisome that despite the large armament of drugs available today for the treatment of these patients, 50% do not reach the control goals defined by the American Diabetes Association. A documentary review was carried out on the evidence of metabolic surgery as a treatment for diabetes mellitus with the aim of determining the impact it may have on these patients, since in recent decades it has been shown to considerably decrease glycemia values in the first postoperative hours. constituting a striking alternative for the treatment of these patients.
