This article seeks to reflect, theoretically, on the issue of migrations and identities in the pre-Columbian past from the archaeological evidence of the Culebra Bay associated with the Sapoa Period (800-1350 AD). In this way, different material indicators are correlated to determine changes and continuities in the archaeological record that could derive from the insertion of Mesoamerican populations to the northwest of Costa Rica. The complexity of the issue in question makes it necessary to develop a conceptual discussion, inspired by agency and social practice theories, to promote the analysis of ethnic identity from archeology in contexts of cultural contact. The data obtained support the proposal that in Culebra Bay, at least, two ethnic identities could coexist during the Sapoa Period which developed several differentiated practices that allowed them to identify as / with particular ethnic groups.
