Abstract

Based on the analysis of the Guatemalan national reality, the concept of party identity is reviewed, from which 3 factors are distinguished: color, political proselytism and experience. While citizens examine the fulfillment of their expectations by political parties to build their party identity, governments examine which political parties and which candidates can participate to remain in power, leading to democratic deterioration in Guatemala. But it is forgotten that without democracy there is no party identity and without party identity, citizen participation is weakening, leaving the hegemonic political power group to continue to keep the electoral process and the different State institutions coopted.
