Agriculture in the municipality of San Marcos plays a vital role in its economy, and in this context, organic agriculture emerges as a global trend. However, its adoption poses challenges for farmers. This study aims to identify the limitations and assess the perspectives for its implementation. The methodology includes focus meetings and the application of surveys. The results reveal that farmers in San Marcos practice organic agriculture in a partial and empirical way, based on knowledge acquired through the MAGA Extension Program. However, their main obstacles include a lack of specialized knowledge in organic agriculture, obtaining fair prices and limited access to markets. In conclusion, the study evidences the interest in organic agriculture among the interviewed farmers, underlining the need for specialized technical assistance, marketing strategies, financing options and certifications for a transition towards more sustainable practices.
